Daegu Pyongyang Naengmyeon Visit Part 2: Daedonggang

Proud Daegu

Places I Frequently Visit in Daegu Lately

Although I'm from Seoul, I've been visiting Daegu often these days.

A long-awaited visit to Daegu! I revisited to finalize a property contract that had been on my mind since my last visit for due diligence!

I revisited Daegu.

After successfully completing the contract, I decided to visit another Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold noodles) restaurant, following my previous visit to Anmyeonok.

During my search, I found 'Daedonggang,' which has been operating as a naengmyeon restaurant since 1965 (They've been around for a very long time! Impressive!). I decided to go there. Let's go!

Daedonggang

The exterior exudes a sense of age. There's no mention of 'Naengmyeon' (cold noodles). It simply says 'Daedonggang' in Hanja (Chinese characters).

The service is not friendly, rather cold. That's the sign of a true local favorite. Famous restaurants aren't typically known for their friendliness. They don't even have 'Naengmyeon' on the signboard.

Daedonggang is all you need. It exudes a strong local favorite vibe.

Upon closer inspection, it's written on the window. It seems they used the signboard to pique curiosity and then revealed the menu on the window glass. It's a clever strategy.

They're experienced.

I navigated past the somewhat cluttered entrance and found a seat at a table inside.

The tables were clean, and the tableware was incredibly simple.

I hadn't eaten breakfast because I was busy with the contract and exploring the area, so I was incredibly hungry. (It's strange that I'm not feeling full even though I haven't eaten.)

I spent some time sightseeing and exploring, which delayed my departure, making my train back to Seoul a bit tight.

I contemplated whether I should accept the penalty for delaying the train or just go ahead and enjoy the naengmyeon. In the end, I decided to just enjoy the naengmyeon without any worries.

Train time rescheduled! Now I can relax and enjoy the meal!!

Peace of mind is happiness.

The atmosphere in the dining area was calm, and as expected of a long-established restaurant, there were many elderly customers. They've been operating the restaurant for almost 60 years.

Neat Chopstick Container

I was pleased with the clean and tidy restaurant atmosphere.

The use of linen cloths for the spoon and chopstick containers is truly impressive. It's a very clean and neat restaurant. Cleanliness is a fundamental requirement for any restaurant.

You can tell a lot about a place by looking at its spoon container. This place is truly clean and tidy.

The side dishes were also very clean and neat. I find myself using the word 'clean' a lot when describing this place. No other word comes to mind.

Clean.

Appetizing Nokdujeon

The mung bean pancake was quite thick, well-cooked, and not greasy, making it light and flavorful.

It pairs exceptionally well with the onion pickle. Very good!

Finally, I encountered today's star – Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold noodles).

The bland yet savory broth complements the chewy noodles perfectly.

The noodles are well-seasoned.

It starts off seemingly bland, then surprises you with a subtle savory flavor.

It's delicious!

Compared to Pyongyang naengmyeon in Seoul, Daegu's version seems to have a slightly more subdued flavor.

It's truly delicious, and I'd love to visit again.
